Salt Song Project

The Native American Land Conservancy has partnered with the Cultural Conservancy and members of several Southern Paiute Bands to revitalize and continue the Salt Song tradition. The NALC worked with Salt Song Project founders and co-directors Vivienne Jake (Kaibab Paiute) and Matthew Leivas, Sr. (Chemehuevi, NALC Board Member), to continue to promote the sacred ceremonial songs of the Nuwuvi people. These songs describe a physical and spiritual landscape of present day California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.

The NALC’s efforts in supporting the Salt Song Project include supporting the creation of a Salt Song Trail map, recordings of the Salt Songs for use by the Nuwuvi people, and hosting project meetings and sings at the Old Woman Mountain Preserve, an area that is part of the Salt Song Trail.
